In this tutorial, I would be showing you how I made this surgeon uniform cake. It is a somewhat easy cake to make. It however needs some fondant prep work done before hand. To read more about this cake and see other views of it, click here.

THE PROCESS:

(1) First, make the fondant stethoscope, pill bottle and pills ahead. A tutorial on how to make the pill bottle and pills can be found here. A tutorial on how to make the stethoscope can be found here.

(2) Next, make the cake card which should be shaped like the cake. To know how to cut out cake boards of this nature, read my post on how to make jersey cakes. That post can be found here. The measurements here are however larger as this is a large cake.

(3) I also make surgical instruments using grey fondant. They are basically 1/2 cm fondant strips formed into the instruments. They were colored with silver luster dust mixed with vodka and allowed to dry.

(4) Next, bake, fill, carve and frost your cake. I used 3.5 ten inch square cakes for this cake.

(5) Cover your cake drum with fondant.

(6) Drape the cake with light green fondant and place the cake on the prepared cake drum. The fondant would most likely tear at the armpit area. That’s fine.

(7) Next, use a fondant wheel/embosser to make seams along the bottom of the uniform and the sleeves. Also make creases on the uniform.

(8) Next, cut out a piece of fondant the shape of the collar and place it on the cake. Cut out a strip of fondant about an inch wide, stitch the edge and make the collar with it. I used a round cutter to hold the back of the collar upright while it dried.

(9) Next, cut out a strip of fondant the same height as the cake and wrap the sides of the cake with it. This would cover the tears at the armpit area and anywhere else.

(10) Next, make the pockets. These are stitched fondant squares with cut out angles. I placed a pair scissors on the cake before placing one of the pockets on it.

(11) Next, make the surgical mask. To make this, fold light blue fondant to create pockets and cover the sides with a strip of white fondant. The white fondant should also be used to create loops at both sides of the mask. Place the mask on the cake.

(12) Next, place the stethoscope parts on the cake. Make a cord out of the leftover blue fondant and connect the parts together. My post on how to make the stethoscope explains this process better.

(13) Next, stick the pill bottle on the cake board with melted white chocolate. Also stick the pills to the cake board.

(14) Next, stick the other tools around the cake on the board.

(15) I later moved the pills around so I could write a message on the cake board. That’s all these is to it. Happy caking!

Hi, great tutorial! I am planning to make this cake for my friends just entering medical school. I was wondering about step 4… How did you get the cakes to stay together in that shape without falling apart or cracking? Does the fondant help hold the cake pieces together? Thanks
