Fondant Headband Tutorial
In this tutorial, I would be showing you how to make headbands or Alice bands with bows out of fondant. This can be used on cakes for young girls like the Ever After High Cake below. The process is very straightforward and easy to execute.
TOOLS:
(1) Rolling Pin
(2) Fondant Cutter
(3) Cylindrical Drying Objects
(4) Paint Brush
(5) Circle Cutter
(6) Fondant Embosser
EDIBLE COMPONENTS:
(1) Fondant
(2) Color Paste
(3) Shortening for Making Large Pearls
(4) Water
(5) Vodka
(6) Gold Luster Dust
(7) Small Sugar Pearls
(8) Corn Syrup
PROCEDURE:
(1) Color fondant ivory, roll it out and cut out hair band shapes. Wrap these around cylindrical objects and leave them to dry properly.
(2) Make the large pearls by rolling fondant in the middle of your palms firmly. Some shortening can be used to arrive at smoother pearls. Leave these to dry. Preferably overnight.
(3) Use a circle cutter to cut out circles sightly larger than the pearls. Brush the circles with a bit of water and place the pearls in the middle. Wrap the edges of the circles around the base of the pearls.
(4) Brush around the edge of the wrapped circles with a little bit of water and place small sugar pearls around the large pearl.
NOTE: These pearls can be used as brooches on cakes like the Pastel Colored Cake and Straw Hat Cake below.
(5) Next, make the bows by looping fondant sheets. The edges of the sheets could be stitched using a fondant embosser.
(6) Brush the surface of the headband with water and stick the bows on it. You would need 4 bows per headband.
(7) Place the large pearl in the middle of the bows.
(8) Mix vodka with gold luster dust together and brush the exposed portion of the head bands with this mixture. Make a 50/50 mixture of vodka and sugar syrup and brush the pearls with this. Allow the head bands to dry properly before using.
