In this post, I will be showing you how to make Pop Cakes. You will be amazed how easy it is to make these cakes. They can be made in a wide range of pop brands and flavors. I thought about this concept while making a Cinema Reel Cake (cake here). One of the celebrants loves Pepsi a lot and I was asked to incorporate that in the cake. I started out making the Pepsi cup and decided to make another cup for myself.

PROCEDURE:

(1) You will need an empty paper cup which will serve as your mold. Color your fondant, roll it out and cut it into the desired height. Wrap it around the cup and cut off any excess fondant. Use water to join the seams together. Leave the cup this way until the fondant dries enough to stand on its own. This could take anywhere from 6 to 12 hours. Also use a cookie cutter the same size as the bottom of the cup to cut out a circle. This will be the bottom of the pop cup.

(2) Next, make the lid. Roll out white fondant into about 1 cm thickness and cut it using a large round cutter. Roll out a strip of white fondant and make vertical lines on it using an embosser. Cut this strip of fondant into the desired length and height to wrap around the lid, brush the lid with some water and stick it around the lid. Use a pipping tip to make a hole in the middle of the lid. Leave this to dry along with the cup.

(3) When the cup is dry enough to stand on its own, remove the paper cup and leave the fondant cup to dry until it can be handled.

(4) Next, make the logo on the cup. I do this using my method of creating 2D fondant images (tutorial here). Cut out the logo from your print out using a sharp blade, roll out your fondant and cut out the characters. Brush the dry cup with vodka (water might soak it) and stick the logo to the cup. Finish the look by mixing vodka and corn syrup together (50/50 ratio) and brushing the whole cup with this. This will make it glossy. Leave the cup to dry for a couple of hours before proceeding.

(5) When the cup is dry enough to touch, pipe some melted white chocolate or royal icing around the base of the cup and attach the bottom of the cup to it.

(6) Now that you are done with the cup structure, its time to fill it up with your cake and frosting. Make your frosting and put it in a pipping bag fitted with a large pipping tip. Also bake your cake in a square cake pan. Using a round cookie cutter the same size as the cup, cut the cake into circles. To build the cake, place a layer of cake at the bottom of the cup. Press it down to make sure it fills the cup properly. Pipe some frosting over that layer, place another layer, press it down, pipe some more frosting and continue this way until the cake has been built completely. Finish the top with some frosting.

(7) Next, pipe some melted white chocolate or royal icing around the rim of the cup and place the rim on top.

(8) Finally, pass the straw through the hole you created on the lid. That’s all there is to it. Happy Caking!
