Fondant Baby Shoes Tutorial
This is a tutorial on how to make cute fondant baby shoes which can be used as toppers for baby shower cakes like the one below (link here). The process is really quite straightforward and the effect on cakes is amazing.
The same process can be used to make larger baby shoes like the ones below.
TOOLS:
(1) Baby Shoes template. This can be found online with a simple google search of “fondant baby shoes template.” Print out a template from the web.
(2) Rolling Pin
(3) Painting Brush
(4) Sharp Blade or X-acto Knife
(5) Fondant Stitching Wheel/Embosser
EDIBLE COMPONENT
(1) Fondant. I use marshmallow fondant.
(2) Water
(3) Color Paste
(4) Vodka
(5) Sugar Pearls or any other add ons
THE PROCESS:
(1) Use a sharp blade to cut out the templates.
(2) You will need two shades of fondant to execute this look. Roll out one of the colored fondant and use a sharp blade to cut out the top of the shoes. Flip the template over when cutting the second pair of shoes. Roll out the second colored fondant, brush it with vodka, stick the cutouts on it and cut with a blade. This will give the shoes a different color inside. Run a fondant stitching wheel along the edges of the shoe tops. Also cut out the soles using the second colored fondant.
(3) Brush the edges of the soles with water and stick the top of the slippers to the soles starting from the front and ending at the back of the shoes.
(4) Stuff the shoes with shredded paper towels or cotton balls. Be careful not to make sharp edges in the slippers as you stuff them.
(5) Finish the look by making add ons for the front of the shoes. These can be teddy faces, flowers or any other cutout you want to use.
(6) Leave the shoes to dry, brush them with some vodka and they are ready to be used on your cake.
