This is a tutorial on how to make a fondant microphone. It can be used as a topper or accompaniment for music or dance themed cakes. The process is straightforward but needs to be carried out in stages. This is one topper you want to make ahead of time as it needs a lot of drying time.

TOOLS:

(1) Rolling Pin

(2) Pizza Cutter

(3) Toothpick

(4) Paint Brush

(5) Thick Floral Wire

EDIBLE COMPONENTS:

(1) Fondant. I used marshmallow fondant

(2) Black Color Paste

(3) Vodka

(4) Corn Syrup

(5) Melted White Chocolate

PROCEDURE:

(1) Shape white fondant into a sausage. One end of the sausage shaped fondant should be thinner than the other. Flatten both ends and leave it to dry for 24 hours. Do not worry much about making the shape very smooth as it would be covered with another layer of fondant when it is dry enough to handle.ย

(2) Shape a smaller piece of white fondant into a ball. Leave the ball to dry for 12 hours. As it dries, underneath the ball would flatten. That’s exactly what you want to happen. If this does not happen, press the ball down a bit to achieve this.

(3) After 12 hours, the ball should be firm enough to handle. Using a toothpick and working in sections, poke holes all over the ball to give it the look of a microphone head.

(4) Mix equal parts of vodka and corn syrup and brush the head with this mixture to give it a glossy look. Roll a thin strip of grey fondant and wrap it around the middle of the head. Leave this to dry while you wait for the body of the microphone.

(2) After 24 hours, bend both ends of a floral wire into loops and insert an end into the top part of the microphone body.

(5) Brush the top of the body of the microphone with melted white chocolate and Insert the head of the microphone into the body. Cover the joint with a strip of grey fondant. The interior of the head will still be soft enough to be penetrated by the floral wire.

(6) Leave the microphone to dry for 12 more hours and it would be ready to use on your cake.
