Fondant Shark Tail Tutorial
This tutorial shows you how to make shark tails out of fondant. This mold features a shark half submerged in water exposing only the tail. It is great for cakes with water themes like under the sea cakes, Noah’s ark cakes, cakes with rivers, Jake and the Neverland Pirates Cake, et cetera. The technique here can also be used for dolphin tails.
TOOLS:
(1) Picture of Shark Tail Fin (Printed off the internet)
(2) Sharp Blade or X-acto Knife
(3) Rolling Pin
(4) Floral Wire
(5) Rolled Paper Towels/Paper
(6) Paint Brush
(7) Fondant Wheel/Embosser
EDIBLE COMPONENTS:
(1) Fondant
(2) Black Color Paste
(3) Vodka
PROCEDURE:
(1) Cut out the printed shark tail fin to create a template.
(2) Add black color paste to the fondant to create grey fondant. Roll the fondant out and use the template to cut out the tail fin.
(3) Use the fondant wheel to mark the edge of the tail fin.
(4) Insert a floral wire into the center of the tail fin and leave them to dry for a couple of hours placing some rolled paper towels under both divides of the fin so it dries with a wave.
(5) After a couple of hours, shape the rest of the tail to look like a pointed and curved stump. Use the fondant wheel to make lines on the tail.
(6) Insert the tail fin into the tail and leave the mold to dry.
(7) For extra effects, shape blue fondant into curved tear drops. These will mimic splashes in the water.
(8) Brush the tails with some vodka after they have dried. Stick them to your cake board or surface and finish the look with the water splashes.
