This is a post on how this messy bed cake was made. To read more about this cake and see other pictures of it, click here. I would start by saying that this is not a detailed tutorial as I did not intend to do a tutorial on this cake while I was making it. Luckily, I took some pictures of the process which I will be sharing below along with description of the steps which I failed to capture.

THE PROCESS:

(1) The first thing I did was to cover the cake board with fondant and make it look like wooden floor. You can find out how I do this in this post. Next, I made the shaggy red rug. Now, this is one process I wish I documented. Basically, I rolled out a rectangular piece of red fondant and placed that on the wooden floor. I used a sharp pair of scissors to frill the front edge of the rug. Finally, I used the spaghetti setting of my pasta maker to cut out thin spaghetti shaped red fondant, allowed these to dry a bit, crushed them with my hands, brushed the carpet with some water and sprinkled the crushed fondant on it. That was how I arrived at the shaggy rug look.

(2) Next, I worked on the bed frame. I placed a frosted rectangular cake on the shaggy rug. Next, I rolled out brown fondant and covered the sides of the cake with it. I also covered the top edges of the cake with the brown fondant. Finally, I mixed brown color paste with some vodka and brushed the bed frame.

(3) Next, I worked on the mattress. I placed dowels in the bottom tier and placed another cake of the same size on the bottom tier. I wrapped the sides of the top tier with ivory colored fondant. For the top of the mattress, I cut out a rectangular piece of fondant and made diagonal marks on it with a fondant stitching wheel. I placed the fondant on top of the cake and cover the top edge of the mattress with a string of ivory fondant.

(4) Next, I placed the fondant headboard at the head of the cake using melted white chocolate. The headboard was made the day before out of brown fondant and left to dry. It was later painted with brown color paste mixed with vodka to give it a darker shade.

(5) Next, I made the bed sheet and pillows. The pillows are just white fondant wrapped with blue fondant. The bed sheet is blue fondant stitched at the edges. The bed sheet was placed on the mattress in such a way that parts of the mattress were still showing. You do not want to hide all that lovely work you have done on the mattress. One of the pillows was placed on the floor.

(6) Next, I made the duvet. I simply cut out diamond shaped blue, white and grey fondant and glued them to a piece of rectangular blue fondant. The edges of each diamond was then stitched with a fondant stitching tool.

(7) Finally, I went messy by placing pieces of clothing and other items on the bed, floor and just about everywhere. All the items were made with fondant. The cloths are 2D cutouts. There is also a book, a closed laptop, a basket ball, a white cord and a pair of slippers. That’s how this cake was made. Happy caking!
