Zulu Themed Cake
I made this cake to celebrate the birthday of a guy who just turned 50. The friend who ordered the cake asked me to play on an African themed wedding cake (Picture below). The challenge was figuring out how to translate a 3 tier cake into a single tier in different colors. At the end of the day, I was able to produce a design which was loved and appreciated by everyone.
The cake itself is a Nigerian Cake frosted with vanilla buttercream. All the design work was done with marshmallow fondant.
Two design patterns standout on this cake. The first is the Zulu shields with spears. Traditionally, these shields are made out of skin and come in various elaborate designs. The shields on the cake were handmade out of marshmallow fondant.
The second standout design is the Rotary shaped spirals which can be seen both in front of the cake and on top as toppers.
At the base of the cake is an elaborate design made of squares of various colors.
This cake was quite an adventure, an adventure I would love to relive in another cake with similar designs.
Wow!Terry, beautiful work. Did you also make the black and white cake? I’m a baker and a client sent me that exact picture for her wedding cake. I’ve got big shoes to fill 🙂 ….any tips on the design?
Thanks. No I did not make the black and white cake. I was sent that picture for inspiration. It is an easy cake to make. Try making the shields and gears before hand so you have less to do on the cake designing day. All the best.
