Fondant Horse Head Topper for Cowgirl Cake Tutorial
This is a topper I made for a simple but lovely cowgirl cake. It is a 2D topper with 3D elements. For more information on how to make 2D Fondant characters, see my very extensive post on that here.
TOOLS:
(1) Rolling Pin
(2) Print Out of Horse Head
(3) Paint Brush
(4) Sharp Blade
(5) Clay Extruder
EDIBLE COMPONENTS:
(1) Fondant. I used Marshmallow fondant.
(2) Color Paste
(3) Water
NOTES:
(1) A clay extruder is a tool used to extrude clay dough through holes of various shapes and sizes. Other materials like playdough and fondant can also be used with a clay extruder. It is a very useful tool to have when you need to make cords or strings out of fondant. If you do not have an extruder, you can use the spaghetti and fettuccine settings of your pasta machine to cut out fondant strings or just roll the fondant with your hands.
THE PROCESS:
(1) Print out a picture of a horse head and use that as a template to cut out fondant. The fondant here is colored deep ivory.
(2) Next, color some fondant brown and use a clay extruder to make a long string with the fondant. Brush some water around the edge of the horse head and stick the brown string to it. Also make a nostril by indenting a large “comma” pattern on the head.
(3) Next, make thinner brown strings and use them to create the mouth, cheek, eye brow, nostril outline and inner ear outline.
(4) Next, cut out the eye using the ivory fondant. Stick it to the head and create the pupils and outline with the brown fondant. Placing a small white dot of fondant on the pupil breathes life into the horse.
(5) Finally make the mane with copper fondant strings, attaching them to the head in clusters starting from the neck upwards.
(6) Allow the horse head to dry before transferring it to your cake.
