The Making of a Pink and Green Birthday Cake
This is a two tier birthday cake. The chosen colors were pink and light green. You can see more of this cake here. This post documents how this cake was made.
THE PROCESS
(1) First, I covered both tiers of the cake with light green fondant. The top tier is 7 inches and the bottom tier is 9 inches.
(2) Next, I made diamond patterns on a sheet of light green fondant and covered the bottom of the 9 inch cake with a a strip of this diamond patterned fondant. For a detailed tutorial on how I make my diamond patterns on cakes, click here.
(3) Next, I placed strips of pink fondant on both tiers. The top tier has a larger strip of pink than the bottom tier.
(4) Next, I covered the top of the 7 inch tier with the light green diamond pattern fondant.
(5) With the major fondant work done, I decided to stack the cakes at the point. This was done with wooden dowels. You can read more about how to stack cakes here.
(6) Next, I placed some white sugar pearls on the diamond patterned portion of the cakes. I also brushed the cake with vodka to remove any confectioners sugar residue and make the cake glossy.
(7) Next, I placed gold details on the cake in the form of thin ribbons and delicate bows. The bows were made about an hour before hand so they would not lose their shape.
TIP: Always know what portions of your cake designs you need to make before hand as some elements need to be partially or completely dry before using.
(8) Finally, pink roses were placed on the cake. A tutorial on how to make these roses can be found here.
Lovely
Thanks
Thanks for sharing these tips. God bless you. I have a question though. If each tier ought to have a cake board underneath it, how do you then drive the single central dowel through to the bottom? Or are the cake boards soft? Must be different from the types i have seen.
The cake boards are soft enough to be penetrated by a sharpened wooden dowel.
Thanks for these tips. God bless you. I have a question though. How does the single centre dowel go all the way down if each tier has a board beneath?
That’s why you sharpen an end so it has a tip. If you check out my stack of books cake, I was able to drive a dowel through all 4 tiers.
Ok. I’ve wondered about this for a while now. Your tips is an answer to a silent prayer. I’m grateful. God bless the work of your hands
Thanks.
i admire ur cakes, very neat and u do a good work with ur boards.thanks for the tips, have been wondering abt d cake board thing. nice work!
Thanks for your message.
i usually put a hole in d centre of all my cake board so i can easily pass a single or double rod depending on d cake size . and it works for me
Thanks for your tip. The sharpening method works for me. I fear I might create too large a hole in the cake board or mess up the cake while poking around for it.
You said you can pass one long dowel through the cakes but then you also said to place a cake board on the already placed dowels on the bottom tier. How will the long dowel pass through then? Thanks in anticipation.
Passing a long dowel through all the tiers is optional but good for added security. You sharpen a tip. It will go through cake cards.
Thanks for the tip. But if my tiers are higher than the one single dowel ( for instance I have like 5 or more tiers of cake), what will I do? Also can I make my own cake board with empty brown cartoons, will they work perfectly? Thanks
The height of your dowels will depend on the height of your tiers. The dowels for each tier should be cut separately. I have never tried empty brown cartons before, I however see no reason why it should not work. You might wanna cover the surface with foil paper though to make it more food-safe.
Cake Cards I mean to type
Thanks Terry for the reply. One more question (sorry to bother you), can brushing with vodka only give my fondant a very good shine (gloss)?
Not very glossy shine, but some shine.
Alright thanks Terry. I appreciate your time. God bless you real good.
You are welcome Shade.
ps sir how do u make the diamond patterns?
I’m not sure I understand your question Yinka as the tutorial clearly shows that the diamond pattern was made with a ruler and a stitching wheel. The same technique which was used here.
