Flowers in Wooden Flower Pot Cake
This cake was made for the birthday of a friend’s colleague. I was asked to make whatever cake I felt like making and I decided to go with this concept. I have been told several times that it looks too real to be a cake. I’d take them at their word. If you want behind the scenes look on how this cake was made, click here.
The cake itself is a chocolate butter cake frosted with chocolate buttercream. The designs on the cake were made entirely of marshmallow fondant.
One thing I love doing a lot with cakes is painting. This cake gave me the opportunity to do just that. The entire wooden part of the cake was painted with ivory color paste. The cake board was also painted to look like wood (Tutorial here)
In making the flower pot, I decided to make some of the horizontal wooden frame appear broken. This was just to make the flower pot look as real as possible.
After the flower pot was painted, it was filled with leftover chocolate cake crumbs to act as sand. I first considered using brown sugar or Graham crackers crumbs, but I felt the cake crumbs were darker and would serve the purpose better.
After the flower pot was filled with sand, the next task was to put the flowers. There are a total of 18 flowers in the flower pot and an extra flower on the cake board. Each flower has 4 leaves attached to it. Trust me, I counted and placed each leaf myself. The leaves made the flower pot look full.
The final touch on the cake were the dead leaves and pebbles I placed on the cake board. This added to the whole look of the cake.
This is one cake which would always remain close to my heart and holds endless possibilities for future cakes.
…and wow was it so beautiful.ur attention to details is so inspiring.i liked the idea of using cake crumbs for the dirt.welldone!
