Fondant Ladybugs
Ladybugs are a lovely way of injecting life and color into your cake. They are fiery red and attractive and can be distributed all over a cake or localized to a section of a cake. They are especially useful in cakes with flowers or grass.
TOOLS:
(1) Fondant Wheel or any Indentation Tool
(2) Ball Tool
(3) Paint Brush
INGREDIENTS:
(1) Red Colored Fondant (I use Marshmallow Fondant)
(2) Black Sugar Pearls (Optional)
(3) Shortening (Optional)
(4) Black Color Paste
(5) Water
PROCEDURE:
(1) Roll red fondant into small balls. To make the balls smooth and glossy, you can apply a little bit of shortening to your palms before rolling.
(2) Using a fondant wheel or any indentation tool, make an indentation in the middle of each ball. This will elongate them a little bit.
(3) Using a ball tool, make sockets in the front of each ball. This would house the ladybug heads.
(4) If you have large black sugar pearls, apply some water to the head sockets and place a sugar pearls there. If you do not have large black sugar pearls, roll some black fondant into small balls and place there.
(5) There are 2 ways of making the black dots on the body of the ladybugs. The first method is to roll little black fondant balls and stick randomly on the ladybugs.
The second method is to dip the tip of your brush in black color paste and make black dots all over the lady bugs.
It is also possible to make flat ladybugs like those in the picture below.
