How to Make Zebra Prints on Fondant
This is a tutorial on how to make zebra prints on fondant. Zebra prints are very popular with birthday and baby shower cakes. Contrary to how it looks, it is actually very easy to make. There are 2 methods of doing this. The first is to roll out your base fondant, make the zebra pattern on it and drape the cake with it. The second method, which is the method I use, is to drape the cake with your base fondant and them cut out zebra patterns and stick on it. I find this second method to be a lot easier than the first which is why I use it.
TOOLS:
(1) Rolling Pin
(2) Pizza Cutter or any other cutting tool
(3) A Paint Brush
INGREDIENTS:
(1) Fondant
(2) Vodka, Water or any other gluing agent.
PROCEDURE:
(1) Cover your cake with fondant. Though white is the norm, feel free to change things and use other light colors if you wish.
(2) Roll out your black fondant. Again, though black is the norm, you can change things up and use whatever color you like. For instance, you could use blue or pink if its a baby shower cake.
(3) Using your paint brush, brush the cake with vodka. I prefer to do this in segments and brush as I proceed.
(4) Using your pizza cutter, cut out strips of fondant and paste on the cake. There is no method to this. Just go crazy. You want to achieve various patterns on the cake in order for it to look real. Lay the fondant strips on the cake in various directions. Your aim here is to cover any wide open spaces.
(5) When you have gone round the cake, brush the black strips with some alcohol to remove any leftover icing sugar and brighten them up. Be very careful when brushing so you do not stain the cake with color bleeds and stained brush strokes.
That’s it, its that easy. If you love animal prints on cakes, I have a tutorial on how to make Leopard Prints on fondant here.

Hi Terry,
Thanks for the tutorial. Can one always use vodka to brighten a cake up. I struggle with making my cakes look bright and shiny because of the icing/corn flour used to smoothen.
