Painted Cake with Yellow Flowers and Ladybugs
A friend of mine was celebrating her twenty ninth birthday and asked for a spring themed cake. The party was going to be in a garden and some form of flowers were required. She however warned me not to make the cake “girly.” I took a trip to Toronto a few weeks after I was briefed and came across these lovely yellow flowers in a garden. I knew at that moment that I had to make similar flowers for the cake.
This is a two tier cake. The top tier is a seven inch red velvet cake and the bottom tier is a ten inch carrot cake. Both cakes were frosted with cream cheese frosting and covered with marshmallow fondant.
The cakes were covered with white fondant and painted florescent yellow and light green. I have come to enjoy painting cakes as opposed to covering them with colored fondant. Its always a surprise when the cake is sliced and the inner part of the fondant is white. The cakes were then stacked and their bases covered with green fondant.
The flowers for the cakes were made about a week prior to when the cake itself was made. They are bright yellow with the tips of the petals brushed with orange pearl dust. A tutorial for how to make these flowers can be found here. I also decided to make a few cute ladybugs to interact with the flowers. Unknown to me at the time I was making them, the celebrant loves ladybugs and was very glad to see them. I have a tutorial on how to make these ladybugs here.
I made a larger flower to serve as the cake topper. If you look carefully into the middle of the big flower, you will notice a ladybug in there.
The flowers were arranged around the cakes in clusters of 3s and 4s, each cluster being demarcated with large green leaves.
Needless to say, the cake was a hit at the party.
This is lovely Terry.
Do you have a tutorial on how you paint your cakes please?
Thanks
Thanks Liz. No I do not have a tutorial yet, but it is quite easy. Just dilute your color paste with vodka and paint with a large paint brush. There is no right or wrong way of doing it.
amazing!
Thanks Maryam
