Skylanders Cake with Thumpback Topper
A friend asked me to make a cake for her ten year old son. I was confused when she stated that she wanted a Skylanders themed cake. I had no idea who or what skylanders was and quickly did some research online. I got to know that it was the name of a computer game. You see, I don’t play computer games. I however did some further research and settled for this cake design.
This is an 8 inch butter chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream frosting.
There are two interesting parts of this cake I wanna talk about. The first is the fondant work on the sides of the cake. This was the first time I was trying this technique and as is to be expected, I was a bit skeptical about it. I wanted this design as most of the pictures I saw online of Thumpback showed him standing on a structure like this. I achieved this side design by rolling out fondant, making grooves on it and poking holes into it with the end of my paint brush. The fondant was then wrapped around the cake.
I added some blue symbols on the sides of the cake in order to replicate the symbols on the structure in the game.
The second interesting part of this cake is the Thumpback Giant Topper who is one of the characters in the game. I am used to doing fondant art, but this task was a bit different. If you look closely at Thumpback, he has a lot going on; spikes, grooves, holes, an anchor, sharp white teeth, et cetera, all of which I had to replicate. I chose Thumpback because I was instantly drawn to him when I first saw his picture online.
Thumpback is a sea giant and so I made the top of the cake blue to represent water.
Needless to say, the skylanders fan loooooooooved his cake. I wonder what other creature or character I will be creating next…
