Pill Cake
When you are a cake artist, you never really know what challenges the next call is gonna bring. I was asked by a friend to make a Pill shaped cake for someone. My first reaction was “no, I can’t do it.” But with some persuasion, he brought me over to his side. So here it is, a pill shaped cake.
The cake itself is a vanilla cake covered with vanilla buttercream. The cake was baked in a 9 by 13 rectangular pan. Being that the pill is shaped like a diamond. I had to carve the cake after it had chilled for some time.
In covering this cake with fondant, I made use of both the draping and paneling method. The panel method was used to give the cake sharp edges. To achieve the characteristic blue color of the pill, I had to mix a lot of shades of blue.
The wordings on the cake were hand made by me using my elementary school art knowledge. I drew a faint chat with 5 vertical boxes and 3 horizontal ones and used that as a guide for each letter. The wordings on the cake were given to me by the friend who ordered it. I guess it is a family joke. A tutorial on how I make my fondant letters without the use of molds and cutters can be found here.
In spite of my earlier reluctance, I am glad I accepted to make this cake as this cake is one of the cleanest and sharpest job I have ever executed.
