Mickey Mouse Cake
This is an exciting and captivating cake I had a lot of fun making. The celebrant is a Mickey Mouse fan and my goal was to capture his attention. This cake has 2 tiers. The top tier is the Mickey Mouse head which is a Chocolate butter cake baked in a spherical cake pan. The bottom layer is a French vanilla sponge. Both cakes are covered with buttercream frosting. The top tier is covered with chocolate buttercream frosting.
The most challenging part of this cake was making the head and face. The Mickey Mouse ears were made about 1 week in advance so as to give them enough time to dry. I was scared that they would fall off during travel, this however did not happen. They were secured with strong gum paste wires which were inserted into them when they were made. If you look closely at the left ear, you will be able to see 3 wires close to the surface of the cake.
I had made bows several times before, but in this cake, I wanted to add polka dots to the bows to give them a real Mickey Mouse feel. I was torn between adding the polka dots to the fondant before shaping the bows and adding them after the bows were made. I opted for the latter and it turned out great. A tutorial on how to make these bows can be found here.
The last detail that was added to this cake was the name tag. This was an after thought. I decided to incorporate the celebrant’s name on the cake in a creative way. You will notice the twisted fondant cord which extends from the front of the bow to the name tag on the side of the cake. As with all my cakes, everything was made with marshmallow fondant.

On the whole, this cake was a success and I look forward to creating more Walt Disney character cakes in future.
Beautiful! Well done!
Thank you.
Well done Terry, beautiful work. I love your bows big and nice, any tips? 🙂
Thanks. I will be doing a bow tutorial in future. I make each side of the bow separately an join them in the middle.
Your cake boards are lovely too. Do u cover them with fondant or is that paper design?
Thanks. That is how I buy the boards. I get them from Walmart or Winners
lovely cake Terry u nailed it really beautiful work
Thank you.
Lovely, cake decor is art and i can’t draw.
You don’t need to know how to draw. Just print a picture off the internet and trace.
Lovely. Pls i will like to know the recipe
Thanks. The French vanilla sponge recipe can be found on this website.
Pls can you do a tutorial on your fondant xters like Dora, bubble guppies etc. I know you said you traced them out by printing but I’m a very visual person, maybe a video tutorial? I know I’m asking for too much. But your attention to detail is amazing without using a fondant or gum paste mold? Wow, that is a Godly gift. Well done bro.
Thanks. I will look into your requests.
terry, honestly u amaze me so much. pls can i really buy that mickey head anywhere and place on the top of the cake. if yes, where pls am based in Lagos- Nigeria
I am not sure. I made mine myself. The head is a cake. The face was made by using mickey mouse face I downloaded from the web as a template.
Thank you Terry for your wonderful tutorials. Pls is it possible to make a Micky Mouse tutorial? Thanking you in advance
Thanks. If I have a Mickey Mouse cake of similar nature to make in future, I will.
