This is a 10 by 5 inch round cake made with a French vanilla sponge. The cake has 4 layers and is filled with vanilla buttercream and covered with marshmallow fondant. The cake was for an awesome guy who was turning one.

Most of the characters were made beforehand. The orange and black fishes are Angel fishes. If you look closely, you will notice that the black tentacle which extends from the fishes is missing in the first fish. That got broken while the fishes were being placed on he cake. The small fishes riding the waves were however a last minute decision and I think they gave some flow to the cake.

This is a cake I had lots of fun making as it was the first time I tried a new technique. I set out to show a wave rise up and hit the top of the cake, a goal I achieved with the aid of a few rollers. It was not easy keeping the fondant suspended as it kept collapsing. But in the end, it got steady.

The topper is an octopus which I made using fondant. The details on the legs were made with rolled up fondant indented with the end of a paint brush. I later decided to brush underneath the legs with pink pearl dust with added more character to the topper. For a tutorial on how to make an octopus topper, click here.

This was also the first time I decided to create bubbles. This was done with the use of blue pearls.

The wordings on the cake were made by embossing fondant with a letter writer. This was later colored brown to make it look like wood.

On the whole, this is a lovely cake for a young sailor. The celebrant was in agreement.
