The Making of Chevron Baby Shower Cakes with Elephant Toppers
In this post, I will be sharing my method of making chevron baby shower cakes with flat elephant toppers. This is a common cake design used for baby showers and one which every baker should know how to execute. I will be linking you to other tutorials in the body of this tutorial. THE PROCESS:
General Instructions for Both Cakes:
(1) Make the elephant toppers. A tutorial for this can be found here.
(2) Make other fondant elements like the letter blocks and sleeping baby for the Yellow and Grey Chevron Cake and the “boy” tag for the Blue and Grey Chevron Cake.
(3) Drape all the tiers with fondant.
(4) Make the chevron design on the bottom tier of the Yellow and Grey Chevron Cake and the top tier of the Blue and Grey Chevron Cake. A tutorial on how to make the chevron design can be found here.
A. Yellow and Grey Chevron Cake
(1) Place dowels in the bottom tier and stack the yellow top tier on it.
(2) Make a 1 inch grey fondant band and wrap around the base of the top tier.
(3) Mix silver luster dust with vodka and brush the band with the mixture. Also brush the grey portions of the chevron design with the mixture.
(4) Finish the cake by placing the elephant topper into the top tier and sticking the letter blocks and sleeping baby on the cake board.
B. Blue and Grey Chevron Cake
(1) Wrap a 1 inch fondant white band around the base of the bottom tier. Stick a 1.5 inch blue fondant band on top of the white fondant band.
(2) Stick a grey 1/2 inch band with fluted edges in the middle of the blue band. This band was made with a special fluted wheel cutter. Stick the fondant boy tag in front of the band.
(3) Insert dowels into the bottom tier and stack the top tier on it.
(4) Finish the design by placing a blue band around the base of the top tier and placing a blue and grey bow on the left side of the tier. Place the elephant topper on top of the top tier.
That’s all there is to it. Happy caking!
