Fondant Octopus Topper Tutorial
This is a tutorial on how to make a fondant octopus like the one I used on the Jake and the Neverland Pirates Twin Cakes below. As can be seen from the Under the Sea Cake further down, there are various ways of making this topper. It is quite easy to execute.
TOOLS:
(1) Round cutters for eyes and suckers. Pipping tips can be used.
(2) Supports for tentacles.
EDIBLE ELEMENTS:
(1) Fondant
(2) Food Color
(3) Water for Glue
PROCEDURE:
(1) Shape the body into a smooth ball.
(2) Shape the tentacles and stick them together to create a star. Place supports underneath the tentacles to give them movement. Leave the tentacles this way to dry until they are set. Take out the supports.
(3) Roll out fondant of a different color and line underneath the tentacles with this fondant. You might want to limit this to only portions where the underneath is visible.
(4) Cut out suckers using small round cutters and stick them underneath the tentacles.
(5) Finish the body by placing the eyes, mouth or any other decoration of your choice on it. Stick the body to the middle of the tentacles. Allow both parts to adhere to each other before placing on the cake.
That’s all there is to it. Happy caking!
