This is a tutorial on how I made the Thomas the Thank Engine Cake above. This is an easy cake to make which is sure to please any Thomas the Tank Engine Fan. For more Thomas the Tank Engine Cake ideas, click here.
THE PROCESS:
(1) First, some preliminary fondant work. Make the rainbow and clouds. A tutorial on how to make the rainbow can be found here. A tutorial on how to make the clouds can be found here.
(2) Make Thomas. A tutorial on how to make Thomas the Tank Engine can be found here.
(3) Make the conifer tree. A tutorial for this can be found here.
(4) Make other elements like the name and age tags.
(5) Cover the cake board with green fondant. Drape the cake with blue fondant and stick it on the cake board leaving enough space in front of the board.
(6) Cut out rectangular black and grey fondant and stick them to the front of the cake. This would serve as the tunnel. Be sure to measure Thomas before making the tunnel so he fits in front of it.
(7) Stick Thomas to the front of the tunnel.
(8) Make the railway tracks using grey and ivory fondant. I made a mistake here by placing the ivory fondant on top of the grey fondant. This was later on corrected.
(9) Stick the tree on the left side of the cake.
(10) Stick some green fondant on the right side of the cake. This would be used to support the number tag.
(11) Finish the cake by placing the rainbow , clouds and name tag toppers on it. Before placing the rainbow, place dowels in the cake to support the weight of the rainbow. This step is optional but advised.
I noticed that the cake needed something extra after I was done with it and decided to stick green fondant around the base of the cake to make hills. That’s all there is to it. Happy caking!
