This tutorial shows how I made the Sofia the First Cake above. This is a cake which is different from the regular tired cakes we are used to making. The differences here however makes the designing process fun. The aim of this cake is to replicate an abstract Sofia the First’s Gown using cakes and fondant as our mediums. I post links during the course of this tutorial where you can find tutorials for other elements of this cake. To see other views of this cake, click here.

I also have a tutorial here on how to create the Sofia the First Cupcake Cake below. Do check it out.

THE PROCESS:

(1) First, make the tiara. A tutorial for this can be found here.

(2) Next, make the pendant for the chain. While I do not have a tutorial on how to make this, I have another tutorial here on how I made similar ornaments. The process is the same.

(3) Next, this cake makes use of a lot of sugar pearls. You can make your own pearls using fondant if you choose to. A tutorial for this can be found here.

(4) Bake and frost the tiers. This is a 2 tier cake. The top tier is a 7 inch round tier. The bottom tier is a semi-sphere. I baked this tier in a 9″ glass bowl, cut off a 7″ diameter flat surface at the top where the top tier would be placed. Frost both tiers.

(5) Drape the bottom tier with white fondant and stick to a covered cake board.

(6) Roll out yellow fondant into a strip and stick a thin purple strip of fondant at the base. Stick this around the bottom half of the tier making ruffles as you go.

(7) Roll out a large circular piece of purple fondant to make the skirt (After covering the top tier with the same purple fondant). This fondant was about 16″ in diameter. Using a semi circular template (which I made out of cake board), cut out semi circles around the rolled out circle.

(8) Using a tear drop cutter, cut tear drop shapes out of white fondant and stick these to the skirt. Drape the skirt over the bottom tier.

(10) Place dark purple fondant around the base of the top tier and on the tier itself as is on the original gown.

(11) Finish the cake by sticking the pendant and pearls on it. Place the finished tiara on the cake. That’s all there is to it. Happy caking!
