The Making of a Wood Grain Cake with Flowers
In this tutorial, I will be showing you how I made the wood grain cake above. This cake features 3 different types of flowers, some stenciling details and a wood grain look. It is relatively easy to make but requires skills and precision. To see other views of this cake and have links to the sponges used, click here.
This tutorial can be used to create similar cakes like the cakes below.
THE PROCESS:
(1) First, make the flowers. Tutorials for the different types of flowers used can be found in the links below.
i. Ruffles Flowers. Tutorial here.
ii. Carnation Flowers. Tutorial here.
iii. Blossom Flowers. Tutorial here.
iv. Berries. Tutorial here.
(2) Make the doily which will contain the name. To make the doily, use a flutter round cookie cutter to cut out white fondant. Make holes around the flutes with a small round pipping tip. Leave to dry. The name was made using Martha Steward’s letter craft mold.
(3) Make the wood grain patterned fondant. You will need a wood grain impression mat to achieve this look. Color fondant light gray. Roll out the fondant and leave it to air dry for about 30 minutes. Do not use very soft fondant to achieve this look or it would not work. Impress the mat on the partially dry fondant to create pattern. Using a ruler and a pizza wheel, cut the fondant into 2 inch panels which are the same height as the frosted cake.
(4) Cover the cake board with white fondant, stick the frosted cake to it and cover the top of the cake with white fondant.
(5) Stick panels to the side of the cake.
(6) Cut out a white strip of fondant and wrap it around the cake. Place a stencil on it and stencil the white fondant strip with pink royal icing or buttercream frosting. I used buttercream frosting here. Read more about how to stencil cakes here.
(7) Stick the doily to the front of the cake with the name on it.
(8) Finish the look by inserting and sticking the flowers on the cake. That’s all there is to it. Happy caking!
