In this post, I will be showing you how I made the dapper baby shower cake above. This is an easy cake to execute but requires a lot of attention to details. During the course of this tutorial, I will be directing you to other tutorials on the website. To see more views of this cake and have access to the recipes used, click here. This cake can be made in several variations like the one below.

THE PROCESS:

(1) First, some preliminary steps. Make the fondant baby shoes and leave them to dry. A tutorial for these can be found here.

(2) Next, make the fondant bow tie (tutorial here), mustache (tutorial here), belt buckle and buttons and leave them to dry. The buttons were made using a button mold.

(3) Cover the cake board with black fondant.

(4) Drape the 8 inch bottom with with blue fondant and stick it to the cake board. This would be the pants. Make sure you leave enough room for the shoes at the side or front of the cake board while sticking the bottom tier to the board.

(5) Cut out a fly for the pants, stitch the edges with an embosser and stick to the front of the bottom tier. Leave a gap above for the belt.

(6) Make a 1 inch belt out of green fondant, stitch the edges and make holes at one end of the belt. Wrap the belt around the top of the bottom tier.

(9) If you like, you can add other design details on the pants like pockets.

(10) Stick the shoes to the board. This can also be done at the end of the design process. I could not wait 🙂

(11) Place dowels into the bottom tier. Drape the top 6 inch tier with white fondant and stack it on the bottom tier.

(12) Make a 1 inch wide placket for the shirt and stick it to the front of the shirt.

(13) Make the suspenders for the shirt. I made these by sticking green fondant on a rolled out blue fondant and cutting out strips. Stick these to the sides of the shirt.

(14) All that’s left now is inserting the mustache on top of the shirt and sticking the bow tie and buttons to the front of the shirt. Do not forget to cover the side of the cake board with a black ribbon. That’s all there is to it. Happy caking!
