Fondant Mustache Topper Tutorial
In this tutorial, I will be showing you how to make a mustache out of fondant which can be used as a cake topper. The Dapper Baby Shower Cake below features this mustache cake topper. There are actually cookie cutters which you can purchase and used to achieve this mustache shape. The tutorial is for bakers who do not have access to such cutters.
TOOLS:
(1) A Sharp Blade or X-Acto Knife
(2) Fondant Wheel/Embosser
(3) Print Out of Mustache
(4) Paint Brush
(5) Thick Floral Wires
(6) Rolling Pin
EDIBLE COMPONENTS:
(1) Fondant
(2) Black Food Color
(3) Water/Vodka
PROCEDURE:
(1) Do a google search for “mustache silhouette” and print out an image. Cut out the image.
(2) Roll out black fondant into about 5 mm thickness, place the printout on the rolled out fondant and cut out the shape using a sharp blade. It is best to leave the rolled out fondant to dry for about 30 minutes before cutting out the shape. This will give you clean lines.
(3) Using a fondant wheel, make wavy lines on the fondant mustache. Making the lines on the mustache before removing the excess fondant would help ensure that the mustache does not lose shape.
(4) Remove the excess fondant and insert floral wires into the base of the mustache. If the mustache is going to be placed on the side of a cake, you do not need to make these inserts. Leave the mustache to dry.
(5) When the mustache is dry, brush it with a bit of water or vodka to remove any icing sugar residue and give it a shine. Leave the mustache to dry again before inserting into your cake.
