In this tutorial, I will be showing you how to achieve stained glass effect using fondant. This technique is great when making church or religious themed cakes like the confirmation cake below. It is quite easy to execute and requires a few steps.

TUTORIAL:

(1) Divide your fondant into several parts and color them  with color paste. Try to use only bright colors.

(2) Also color some fondant black (or very dark grey), roll it out and cut it into a circle the same size as the circumference of the cake. Use the base of your cake pan or cake cards as templates.

(3) Roll out the colored fondant and cut them into 1 inch strips. It is best to work with fondant which is somewhat dry. I would advice this, you roll out the fondant and leave them exposed for about 30 minutes before cutting them into strips. This will give you clean and sharp cuts.

(4) Using any indenting tool, divide the black fondant into 4 segments. You can also make this division in your mind. You will be working with one segment at a time. Using a pizza cutter, cut out triangles, squares, rectangles and other diagonal shapes out of the fondant strips. Brush a segment of the fondant with a bit of water and stick the cutouts to that segment always starting from an angle in the middle of the circle and spreading out. There is no real method to this. Your aim is not to leave any wide black space. After finishing with one segment, move on to the other.

(5) When you have finished covering the whole circle with the cutouts, mix 1 part vodka and 1 part corn syrup together and brush the cutouts with this being careful not to stain the lighter colors with the darker colors. Leave the topper to dry a bit before transferring it to the top of your cake.

Note that this process can also be carried out directly on the top of the cake. Simply place the black fondant circle on top of the decorated cake and follow the steps above. I however like making elements of my cakes ahead of time, thus spreading out the work load over several days.

(6) To make the stained glass effect at the base of the cake, simply cover the base with a strip of black fondant and stick the cutouts to the fondant. Brush with the vodka-corn syrup mixture when you are done.
