Nigerian Luggage Wedding Cake
When a bride gets married in Nigeria, it is often the custom for the groom’s family to present her with luggage filled with expensive wrappers, fabrics and materials like ankara and aso oke (To read more about aso oke, click on this link which directs you to my aso oke cake shown below). This cake celebrates this tradition and was made for a traditional Nigerian wedding ceremony. On top of the luggage is a fila (hat worn by men) with extended flaps on both sides. This cake is all about the details on the luggage which are simple, uniform and effective. This is my first luggage cake and I am happy I was able to execute it. It might also be my heaviest cake ever as transporting it was no easy task.
Two different types of sponges were used for this cake. The fila and bottom tier were made using my Nigerian cake recipe. The middle tier was made using my Nigerian wedding cake recipe. Both tiers were frosted with vanilla buttercream and all the design work was carried out with marshmallow fondant.
Links on how to make the beaded necklace and bracelet can be found here and here.
A detailed tutorial on how the entire cake was made can be found here.
