This is a post on how I made this lovely two tier baby shower cake with fondant baby shoe toppers. This is a simple cake to create. Once you are done with the bottom tier, the rest is simply a walk in the park. To read more about this cake, know about the sponges and frosting used and see other views of it, click here.

PROCEDURE:

(1) First, make 2 pairs of fondant baby shoes. A tutorial for how to make these can be found here.

(2) Next, make the platform for one pair of shoes topper. I used a wood grain stamp to make the wood grain pattern on top and on the sides of the platform. Next, I rolled out a thick disk of fondant and covered it with the patterned fondant.

(3) Next, make the buttons. I used a button mold for these. They should be made in white and various shades of moss green.

TIP: When using any type of silicon mold, first brush the mold with shortening, fill them with fondant, place the mold in the freezer for about 10 minutes for the fondant to harden, and then unmold.

(4) Cover your cake board with white fondant. Next, drape both cake tiers with white fondant. Stick the bottom tier to the cake board.

TIP: You would notice the hole in the middle of the bottom tier. I always make holes in my tiers after crumb coating. This allows air to escape from the tier as it settles, thus eliminating the risk of air bubbles after draping with fondant. See other baking solutions here.

(5) Next, make the ruffles. The ruffles here are two colors: white and a light moss green. I alternated between both colors until the tier was completed. To make your ruffles, roll fondant into 1 inch strips, use a ball tool of the body of a paint brush to thin out one side of the strip, brush your tier with water and stick the ruffled strips on the cake starting from the top and working your way down. Overlap the ruffled strips by about a centimeter when sticking them to the tier. You can see this tutorial for a more tips on how to make the ruffles.

(7) Next, roll out white fondant the height of the top tier and enough to wrap it. Use a fondant wheel or embosser to make 1/2 inch squares on the fondant. Brush the top tier with water and wrap it with this fondant.

(8) Next, stick the platform on the top tier with some melted white chocolate, or royal icing or any other gluing agent of your choice.

(9) Next, stick the buttons on the tiers.

(10) Finish the look by placing the shoe toppers on the cake. I placed a pair on top of the top tier and another to the side of the top tier. I used melted white chocolate to secure them to the cake. Happy caking!

Hello terry, great work as usual. I am a beginner in this field so please pardon my question.

Please clarify- brush the top tier with water and wrap it with this fondant (no 7), did you mean brush the cake itself with water?

    Thanks.
