The Making of a Cinema Reel Cake
This is a tutorial on how this cinema reel cake was made. This cake features 2 cinema reels with film, a box of popcorn and a cup of pop. I already have a tutorial on how the cup of pop was made. You can find that tutorial here. The notes below is how the rest of the cake was made.
THE PROCESS:
(1) First, make the disks for the reels. You will need 4 disks in total. To make these, color fondant grey and cut out 9 inch disks. Using a smaller round cookie cutter, cut out circles around the disk and a smaller circle in the middle. Leave these to dry thoroughly. When they are dry, brush the top with vodka mixed with silver luster dust. They have to be very dry as they would be supporting a lot of weight.
(2) Next, make the panels for the popcorn box. I have a detailed post here on how I make dry fondant panels. Do check it out. You will need 4 panels in total. While the side panels are rectangles. the front and back panels have wider tops. To make the panels, cut out white fondant into the desired shapes and leave them to dry a bit. Then add the red details using red fondant.
(3) Its time to build the cake. I used 7 inch round butter chocolate cakes for the reels. They were about 3 inches high each. You will need a lot of melted white chocolate for the building process. A thin royal icing can also be used. Drape your cake board with white fondant. Next, stick the first disk on the cake board using some melted white chocolate.
(4) Next spread some melted white chocolate on the disk and place the first cake tier on it.
(5) Next, create the film which would go around the cake. This basically a white strip of fondant with black fondant trimmings around edges and thin vertical black fondant strips placed at intervals. Shorter white fondant strips were also placed on the black horizontal edges. Each film should be long enough to wrap the cake tier with a bit more. You might as well make two of these films at the same time. Brush the cake tier with water and wrap the film around it.
(6) Next, cut out a black disk of fondant and place it on top of the cake. Next, place dowels into the bottom tier.
(7) Next, spread some melted white chocolate on the cake and place another disk on it. This completes the bottom tier.
(8) Next, build the second tier following the same steps as the first. Spread some melted white chocolate on the top of the bottom tier and place the third disk on the cake. This disk should should stick out by about 2 inches. Build the second tier on top of this disk.
(9) With the reels done, its time to make the third tier which is the box of popcorn. Start by sticking the box shaped cake on top of the disk. The box shaped cake should have a cake card underneath it. It should be about an inch shorter than the panels.
(10) Next, stick the panels around the tier.
(11) Next, fill the top of the box with popcorn. Drizzle melted white chocolate after each layer of popcorn so they stick to each other. Also stick some popcorn and M&Ms on certain portions of the cake and board.
(12) Finish the cake by sticking the pop cake in front of it. I also inserted fondant stars into the tiers. These were made by cutting out fondant stars, inserting floral wires into them and leaving them to dry before placing them in the cake. That’s all there is to it. Happy caking!

Hi there! Love your cake and tutorial. I’m planning to make this cake with 2 10″ layers. Not sure how much fondant I will need to make thick enough reels. Do you have a recommendation? Also, do you know where to buy quality bulk fondant for this project?
Thank you!!
Patti
