Bundles of Aso Oke Cake
This cake was made for a traditional Nigerian wedding ceremony. It is one of my favorite cake creations and as you might be able to tell, I enjoyed making this cake a lot.
This cake consists of 4 bundles of aso oke tied together with a ribbon, a shoe, purse and accessories. Aso Oke is a traditional Nigerian fabric which is hand woven and used for special occasions.
The cake itself consists of 4 individual cakes. Each Cake is a 9 by 13 inch pound cake frosted with vanilla buttercream and covered with marshmallow fondant.
Each cake was individually crafted to reference actual aso oke prints. They were also shaped to look like folded fabrics.
The cakes were stacked together, making sure that there were no color clashes and each layer complimented the other.
The layers were finished with a ribbon and loops made out of fondant.I have a tutorial on how to make this type of loop bow here.
This cake also had accompanying accessories. The chain and bracelet were made using my pearl beading technique which can be found here.
This was my first time of making a fondant shoe. I must confess that I almost gave up on it as the sole broke at a point in time. I am glad it all worked out. Not bad for my first shoe. I have a tutorial here on how to make fondant stilettos.
This cake was the inspiration behind a Nigerian Independence Day Cake I made.
It has also inspired other aso oke themed cakes like the String Aso Oke Cake below.
Very creative but I would want to know how to make shoe . Thanks boss
I’d upload a tutorial when next I make one. Thanks.
Hi Terry, I remember the first time I saw this cake. I thought wow, I really love it and I want to attempt something similar for my mums birth that cake. Just one quick question,
did you crumbcoat both the top and bottom of each cake and wrap /fold in fondant? Thank you.
Hi Ruth. I frosted each cake as I would frost a cake normally. Didn’t frost bottom. The sides are tucked in. I hope this helps.
Yes, that helps. Thanks for quick response.
Hi Terry,
your cakes are inspirational and this one is a lovely concept, could you please confirm how to create the folded fondant effect?
Thanks. Its really hard to explain though. The tiers are not folded but indented. I hope that makes sense.
Hi terry, its amazing, its breath taking,am in love with it,i want to learn how to make it so whats d cost and where is ur workshop?
Thanks. I don’t run a bakery. I just run a blog.
wow I really love this cakes its really a creative work of art
Thanks.
Hi, i really love this wonderful creation of yours, i would like to know how to make this for myself, do u have a video or step by step pix to help me achieve this, thanks Korede
Hi. No I don’t have a tutorial on this. It was made before I started doing tutorials.
The cake is really nice. Please did you make the fold effect after covering with fondant or you shaped the cake before covering with fondant. Cos I think you might expose the cake to get that deep indentation.
The cake is shaped; lots for frosting is used around it for cushion effect; the fondant is draped fondant is indented with an embosser.
Hi terry, please I am baking something like this for a friend soon but I haven’t quite gotten it. Did u just place them on each other or you used a cake plate and drilling rod 2)was it chrisco shortening you used to clean up or something else? 3)the particular one she wants is higher than yours (each stack) does that mean I have to double mine or use a dipper pan?
Hi. (1) Each of the bottom tiers have dowels in them for support. (2) Vodka. (3) Either way will work.
Good work…..God bless you dearly
You are welcome.
Lovely cakes. pls what pan did you use?
Thanks. 9″ x 13″

Please see my response to comments above.
Terrylicious Terry,my imagination is running wild as per how to achieve this, please do i have to roll the cake with fondant before i make indentation just wondering how to get this fold effect, abeg nor vex for my plenty questions
Hi. Please see previous questions on the issue and my answers to them. Thanks.
Aha!!! This is brilliant, just what I was looking for but no tutorial😌😩. So glad I found your site.
Quick question please.
Did you cover using the drape method or did you cover the sides first, then indent before draping the top.
How much do you figure you would charge for a cake like this. Thanks in advance. God bless.
Hi ChiChi. I used the drape method and indented the sides.
