Fondant Elephant Tutorial (Easy)
Fondant animals are often used as toppers for kids cakes. They can be used on top of birthday cakes or baby shower cakes. This is a tutorial on how to make an easy elephant fondant topper.
The knowledge gained from this tutorial can be worked upon to make more complex elephants like the one in the picture below (See pictorial here). This simple elephant is however a great starting point.
TOOLS:
(1) Paint brush or any tool with a round pointed end.
INGREDIENTS:
(1) Fondant. I make use of Marshmallow Fondant. The recipe for this can be found here.
TIP: Ensure that the fondant is strong and not soft. Add more confectioners sugar to the fondant to achieve a stiff dough.
PROCEDURE:
(1) Divide fondant into 9 pieces: 1 large round piece for the elephant head, 1 large oval piece for the body and 7 smaller round pieces for the ears, limbs and trunk. You will need some little black fondant for the eyes. You will also need some extra fondant for the navel and tail (optional)
(2) First, you need to make the head. Take 2 of the smaller fondant pieces and flatten with your fingers to make the ears. Try to get them to be the same shape. Using a little water, stick the ears to the sides of the larger head piece.
(3) Next, make the trunk. Roll one of the fondant pieces in the middle of your palms to form a thin log. Using the end of a paint brush, make a hole at one end of the trunk to form the nostrils. Use some water to stick this to the middle of the head. Curve the trunk as needed. You can use anything to support the trunk so as to keep it in shape while it dries.
(4) Next, make the eyes. Roll out 2 small black pieces of fondant into balls. Using the end of a paint brush, make 2 holes in the head where the eyes would be. Brush the holes with a little water and poke the eyes into the elephant’s head.
(5) Now that you are done with the head, the next part is the body and limbs. Take two pieces of fondant and flatten to make the hind feet. Next, using the end of a paint brush, make 4 holes on each foot to represent the digits and a larger hole in the middle of each foot. Stick the hind feet to the bottom of the elephant’s body with some water.
(6) If you want to add a navel to the elephant, roll out a tiny piece of fondant, make a hole in the middle with the end of a paint brush and stick it to the body.
(7) Next, make the fore limbs. Roll out the remaining two fondant pieces to make two logs of equal shapes. Use some water and stick them to the top of the body.
(8) Finally, attach the head to the body of the elephant.
(9) Allow the elephant to dry overnight before using. You can make it months ahead of time and keep covered in a safe place. After elephant has dried, use some little alcohol or water to brush it so as to remove any excess confectioners sugar and make it glossy.
That’s how to make an easy fondant elephant.
