You have these Wilton 3D soccer ball pans which are great for making soccer ball cakes and fondant toppers. Beyond these traditional uses however, there is a lot more you can do with these pans. Below, I will be showing you other ways of using these ball pans; ways which I doubt Wilton contemplated when making the pans. The list below is by no means exhaustive. Please feel free to add other uses of these pans in the comment section below this post.
(1) SPORTS BALL CAKES
Let’s start with the traditional use of these pans: to make sport balls. These pans can be used to make any round sports balls like soccer balls and basket balls. Depending on the dimensions of your cake, smaller balls like golf balls and tennis balls can also be made using these pans. I have a post here on how to make ball cakes and cake toppers using these pans.

I have a tutorial here on how to make fondant hard hat cake toppers.
(6) BASSINET CAKES
Baby bassinet cakes are becoming very popular with baby showers. The hood portion of these cakes can be the most challenging part of the cake to execute. The sports ball pans can be used to create fondant shells which can be used to make the hood portion of bassinet cakes. I have a tutorial here on how to make bassinet cakes.
(7) CALABASH AND BOWL CAKES
The Wilton sports ball pans can also be used to make calabash and bowl cakes and fondant toppers. The 3 calabash toppers on the African inspired cake above were made using the sports ball pans. Using similar techniques, the pans can also be used to make gourd cakes, vase cakes and flower pot cakes.
(8) GRADUATION CAP CAKES
These pans can be used to make graduation cap cakes. Simply cover the frosted cake with fondant and place a card on top of it. A tutorial on how to make the graduation cap cake above can be found here.
(9) MICKEY MOUSE CAKES
Depending on the design you are going for, these pans can also be used to make Mickey Mouse cakes like the cake above. The head portion was created using the sports ball pan. The ears were made ahead of time and inserted into the fondant covered head.
