When making basketball themed cakes, the need might arise to include basketball hoops into the design. One way of doing this is by converting a cake tier into a hoop. The process of doing this is not as complicated as it looks and requires basic cake designing tools. The tutorial below demonstrates this process.

TOOLS:

(1) A Paper Circle Folded into Segments.

(2) A Fondant Extruder (Optional)

(3) A Paint Brush.

(4) Sharp Blades/ Knives

EDIBLE COMPONENTS:

(1) A Cake Tier Draped with Fondant.

(2) White Fondant

(3) Color Pastes (Usually Red for the Ring)

(4) Water or Vodka

THE PROCESS:

(1) First, drape the cake tier with fondant. The tier can be draped with fondant of any color.

(2) Cut out a paper circle the same circumference as the cake tier and fold it into segments. Unfold the circle, place it on the cake tier and mark the various segment points on the top edge of the tier using a sharp blade or tool.

(3) Using a fondant extruder, make white fondant strings. You can roll the strings out by hand if you do not have an extruder. Stick the strings to the marked spots on top of the cake tier. There should be 2 strings glued to each spot and the strings should be longer than the height of the tier.

(4) Begin sticking the stings together to form a net. Cut short white fondant strings and use these to cover the spots were the strings come in contact with each other.

(5) Continue the process until you have covered the entire tier with the net design. Cut off any excess strings.

(6) Another option is to twist the strings together where they meet.

(7) Make the ring out of red fondant and place this over the top of the net. The ring can be a thick fondant string or a flat fondant disk with a hole in the middle.

(8) Complete your cake design.

That’s all there is to it. Happy baking!

Hi. You cut a paper circle, fold it in half, fold it into another half and fold once more to create a circle with 8 segments. Place the paper on top of the cake and mark the cake at the points where the folds are.
