How to Make Fondant Football/Soccer Cake Tiers
Traditionally, soccer themed cakes come in spheres. However, not every baker is comfortable making spherical cakes and sometimes, spheres do not satisfy the design or cake specification needs of the client. When this is the case, an agreeable alternative is to make regular cake tiers and cover the sides of the tiers with a soccer ball pattern, in this case, black and white hexagons. If done properly, the covered tier will have the appearance of a real soccer ball. Below, I will be sharing the technique I use to achieve a soccer ball look on cake tiers.

TOOLS:
(1) Rolling Pin
(2) Blade or X-Acto Knife
(3) Hexagon Cutters (See Note 1)
(4) Paint Brush
(5) Fondant Stitching Wheel
(6) Fondant Smoother
NOTES:
(1) If you do not have a hexagon cutter, a simple google image search for “hexagon” will provide pictures. You can print out a picture or simply place a paper on your monitor and trace it out (like I did) and cut it to make your template. Soccer balls usually have white hexagons and black pentagon patterns on them. I however decided to use only black and white hexagons for this design.
THE PROCESS:
(1) Drape the cake tier with white fondant and keep in the fridge to set while you work on the soccer design.
(2) Roll out a white strip of fondant and cut it into a large rectangle long and high enough to wrap the side of the cake tier.
(3) Roll out more white and black fondant and use your template to cut out hexagons on both.
(4) Brush the white fondant rectangle with a bit of water or vodka and stick the hexagon cut outs on it. When you have covered the entire rectangle with the cut outs, use your stitching wheel on the edge of each pentagon to complete the soccer ball pattern.
(5) Brush the sides of the draped cake with a bit of water or vodka and wrap the rectangular soccer patterned fondant around it, ensuring that both ends of the rectangle meet at the back of the cake. Use a fondant smoother around the sides of the cake so the pattern adheres firmly to the cake.
(6) Complete the cake design as desired.
Nice tutorial. Please how did you get the top tier suit design. I’ll love a tip/tutorial on that. Thanks a lot. Carol.
Thanks Terry for this tutorial, you are indeed a blessing. Pls what do you use to give your cake a neat finishing .is it brushing with vodka and water? Thanks
You are welcome Becky. This post should answer your question.
Thank you very much for this Terry. Please am I supposed to “mark out” hexagonal patterns on the white fondant rectangle before sticking the hexagon cut outs on it?
No. You make the template, place the template on the fondant and cut out the shapes on the fondant using a blade.
